Seamanship and Sailing Trips

Volharding is first and foremost a sailing vessel and the West Coast of Scotland has some of the finest sailing grounds in the world.

We will be providing opportunities to learn the ropes and experience sailing a historic vessel on Scottish waters. These trips can vary from a few days to a week.

A working sailing vessel provides an exciting environment to learn a broad range of skills including rope skills, how a boat sails, navigation, and teamwork. All crew will be supporting the day-to-day running of the ship which can include anything from setting the sails, to cooking and more.

Learning opportunities and the great outdoors

Argyll and Bute and its surrounding waters are considered an area of outstanding natural beauty. Experiencing that from the water provides a lasting impact and perspective.

As part of Volharding's mission, she will provide a platform for local community groups, charities, and organizations who work with young, disadvantaged, or other individuals who would otherwise lack the means to access alternative experiences to gain skills and learn on the water.

To ensure fair access to these experiences partial funding or subsidies are planned and all trips will run on an at-cost-only basis to encourage groups who run on a charitable basis to get involved.

To give you an idea of the types of trips we are planning to support please see below. However, we can support bespoke requirements so please get in touch if you have any suggestions!

  • Shorter 2-4 day voyages starting from Oban. Shorter passages provide the opportunity to get a taste of life at sea. These can include overnight stays in nearby harbors or anchorages near or around the Isle of Mull, visiting beautiful villages such as Tobermory

  • Longer passages of up to 8 days which provide a full adventure to experience life under sail, including trips ranging from the Caledonian canal, rounding the Isle of Mull or exploring the many Islands in the region such as Jura, Islay or Colonsay.

  • Bespoke trips catering to specific needs - Volharding is an excellent platform for specific adventures, whether it is wild swimming, kayaking, walking, or less active trips such as bird watching and art there is no shortage of activities in the region that are accessible by water.
